The Advanced Fuels Campaign employs a “goal-oriented, science-based approach” to gain a fundamental understanding of fuel and cladding fabrication methods and performance under irradiation, enabling the pursuit of multiple fuel forms for future fuel cycle options.  This approach includes fundamental experiments, development of materials science theory in the area of nuclear fuels, and advanced modeling and simulation.  Development of advanced modeling and simulation tools for use in analyzing fuel performance is led by DOE’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, although AFC researchers are active in developing and implementing fuel performance models into NEAMS tools.
